Hydrangeas are one of the quintessential flowers of summer, with their large, colorful blooms brightening the garden starting in late June or early July. Of the dozens of varieties we sell each year, we grow a fresh crop of some of our favorite varieties for mid-to-late summer, and this crop is blooming now and ready for transplant into your garden. Included in our 2024 summer crop are some of our best sellers and a few hot new varieties, like ‘Cherry-Go-Round’ and ‘Starfield,’ among others. Learn more about a few of our favorites below.

Unlike mophead hydrangeas that often prefer partial shade, panicle varieties thrive in sun–the more sun the better. ‘Fire Light Tidbit’ starts out with white flowers, and as summer progresses, the flowers gradually take on shades of pink and red, eventually fading to a dusky pomegranate color in autumn. Growing just 2-3′ tall and wide, this variety packs all the punch of its larger sibling ‘Fire Light’ on a much smaller plant.

Hydrangea ser. ‘Tuff Stuff’
Looking for a hydrangea that’s tough as nails, easy to grow, and loaded with color? Look no further than ‘Tuff Stuff’ mountain hydrangea. This cold hardy lacecap hydrangea can stand up to even the harshest northeaster in the winter and still put out wave after wave of colorful blooms throughout the summer–starting already in June! Each of the flat flower heads has larger blooms encircling a cluster of small, popcorn-like buds, typical of what are commonly called lacecap hydrangeas. Unlike old-fashioned lacecap varieties, however, ‘Tuff Stuff’ only grows 2-3′ tall and wide, making it perfectly suited for smaller gardens. The color of the blooms will range from pink to purple depending on soil pH.
